The Beggar And Foreign Currency …

I have noticed this becoming more of a thing lately … I have come across a lot of different people, from different places who go around begging for money … these range from kids to woman to old men and middle aged Asians … and its really starting to get to me now … i try to avoid them as much as i can … and they keep getting stickier and stickier … i dont know why is this is becoming such as common thing … do they make that much money ?

i even noticed that they work in zones … the same people are always in the same areas… is it organized ? do they have secret meetings where they distribute the work load? do they fight over their areas of work? all these questions need to be answered … but who is going to answer them ?

Here are my favorite four encounters …

Qurum:

In the days before city center opened i used to be a frequent qurum visitor.. i still go somtimes but hardly as often as i used to … in the past this area used to be dominated by annoying little Omani kid beggars … they are dirty obnoxious little things that annoy the money out of you … they move in packs with the tallest usually being the leader … he speaks in an annoying high pitched voice and repeats the same sentence … “Give me a Rial” … over and over and over

“3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal” “3a6eeni riyaaal”

the longer you ignore him the quicker he speaks until … you just can stand it anymore and end up just giving him the Rial so he can leave you alone… when i ever i used go to Qurum i used to try to avoid the little freak … the first time i gave him the bloody rial … the second time i refused:

KID: 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial)

OM: Mafi Rial ( i dont have)

KID: 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial)

OM: ma 3andi riyal ( i dont have any)

KID: 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial)

OM: MAAA 3indi (I DONT have)

KID: 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial)

OM: 3a6aytak Rial ams (i just gave you a rial yesterday)

KID: 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial) 3a6eeni riyaaal (give a rial)

OM: INZAAAIIN !!! (OKAY !!!)

After that i never got of my car in qurum until i took a few round to make sure that these annoying kid gang is no where to be seen…

Madinat Qaboos:

There is woman from the area we call sham ( palestine, jordan, syria, and lebanon) my guess is that she is Palestinian Jordanian. She is always dressed in a black abaya and sometimes walks around while carrying an infant in her hand… I am never sure if its a real baby or if its just a toy wrapped up to look like a baby … you never see the little baby’s face … she walks around and approaches people inside and out side star bucks… ive even seen her going to into where mood cafe and cafe G are and working the tables there…

The first time i gave her some change

The second time i asked here to get a job but still gave her some change

The third time:

PW: Allah y’7aleek sa3idny (please help me may Allah make you live long)

OM: Allay Ya36eech (May Allah give you what you need)

PW: Ana miskeena, zoji mareedh, 3andi awlad …

OM: Allay Ya36eech (May Allah give you what you need)

PW: Ana mit’3arbah o ma3ndi shee hon (i am foreigner here and dont have anyone)

OM: Inti kill youm mdawmeh hina ? (You are on duty here every single day)

PW: Allah y’7aleek sa3idny (please help me may Allah make you live long)

So i give her some change… and she leaves … i hang around the star bucks outside seating area and have my coffee… half an hour later she comes back and starts again … so i snap at her and tell her that i just gave her some cash … her sad face suddenly changes into a sneaky smile, she apologizes and disappears ..

Al Khuwair:

This encounter was disgusting … an Asian guy approached just as i got into my car … i had just collected my take away order from Hardees… This guy appears from no where and starts knocking hard on the window…. i bounce in my place and it takes me a minute to register what is happening .. as the window goes down the guy puts his hand forward to shake my hand …. time froze … do i really want to shake this guys hand? i squint and my hand moves forward in an involuntary action to his hand … the minutes he touched my hand i could hear the little voice in my head saying ” you IDIOT why are you shaking this guys hand” .. i pull back right away … as soon as i do he start crying hysterically … he freaked me out for the second time in the same minutes … i have no idea what he is saying but he lifts his shirt to reveals this disgusting urine filled plastic bag that was tied to his waste …. THAT WAS IT …

All i can think about now is why the hell i shook this guy HAND …. WWHHHYYYYYY …. WHYYYYY……. WHHHHHYYY …….i reach into my pocket with my clean hand and take out what ever money was in there and i almost threw it at him … take the money and leave me alone … i get out of the car (make sure its locked) and run back into Hardees to wash my hands…

Athaiba:

This happened yesterday … did some shopping at safeer … on the phone … carrying the bags … and walking back to my car … put the bags in the back and get into the car … still on the phone … sitting in the car having a conversation …

suddenly notice this old Omani with white hair and scruffy white beard standing next to passenger window … i continue to talk on the phone … a few minutes later he start to knock on the window … i tell the guy on the phone to hold on:

OM: Tfadhal (can i help ?)

MO: sama7ni ya waldi (forgive me my son)

OM: Masmoo7 ba, tfadhal (forgiven, can i help?)

MO; tsa3id rijal shayeb ma min muskut (will you help an old man that is not from muscat)

I have this guy on the phone still holding … i take out my wallet … all i have is 15 Dirhams (UAE Money) and 20 Rials … I cant give him twenty … and he would probably say no to the dirhams … so i go for it …

OM: Bah, ma shy 3andi ill darahim kan tbahum … (I only have dirhams, if you want them)

MO: Ma mushila waldy .. ma mushkila (no problem son .. no problem)

Now i think to myself … what on earth is going on … A beggar that accepts foreign currency … And i thought i was being sneaky by offering drihams … He takes my dirhams and runs back to safeer … As i turn my attention back to the person i am speaking to over the phone i cant help think what would have happened if i had Zimbabwean Dollars … would he have still taken them ? as i drive out of the parking i notice that there is a money exchange shop in safeer…
